SOCIAL MEDIA ETIQUETTE

Radian6 elaborates on three benefits on exhibiting proper etiquette on social media chanels: Reciprocation, respect, and reliability (http://www.radian6.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Radian6_Jul2011_eBook.pdf) Today, you are what you say on Facebook and G+. Though many do not write or interact, everyone reads what you post. This is an important list* for Facebook/G+ users, because it is essential to be mindful of the footprint you are creating on social media channels.

(*If you feel I left out something important, please post in the comment box below. Thanks!)

Sixty Things to Avoid on Facebook/G+:

  1. Ignore friend requests
  2. Jumble both cases when typing (“iM sO cOoL tO tYpE lIkE tHiS”)
  3. Air dirty laundry
  4. Comment on your own status first
  5. Type in caps (“BACK IN AIRPORT AGAIN”); this is equivalent to screaming
  6. Write like a kid (“omfg lol i’m sooooooooo druuuunk to tyyyppeee lol”)
  7. Misspell (“Im definately drrumk to typ”)
  8. Write using acronyms (“FYI, yo BTW u typ kool WTF”)
  9. Use obscene language
  10. Show unconditional love publicly (“I want 2 kissss you, u look soo hottt”)
  11. Tag all friends to insure they see the picture posted
  12. Tag all friends in a post to insure they read
  13. Send mass message (“Happy 2012″ to all the 614 friends over a message)
  14. Use Facebook message instead of regular e-mail
  15. Moan in Facebook status (“When is this week going to end?” “Oh, it is Monday again”)
  16. Send invites to play games (attend events) repeatedly
  17. Use your partner’s account to connect with your friends
  18. Call oneself with titles (“Regards, Dr. Andy Smart”)
  19. Like or +1 one’s own status messages
  20. Send multiple friend requests (serial friending)
  21. Wish your friend birthday because the wall calendar prompts birthdays (a phone call or e-greeting may be more appropriate)
  22. Post multiple status messages continually (“I am at ORD Chicago airport,” “Security lines are so long,” “I am hungry now,” “Gawd, my flight is delayed”)
  23. Say the same thing over and over
  24. Give out too much information (listing every movie, book, or band you ever liked)
  25. Stalk friends and their friends (beware, there are apps which inform users who viewed profiles)
  26. Breakup over a status update (“If there are no messages on FB, it’s probably me.”)
  27. Change your Facebook name so that nobody can recognize (“Jade Warrior”)
  28. Delete added friends (serial unfriending)
  29. Send friend requests to friends you unfriended in the first place
  30. Post inappropriate pictures
  31. Write in an alien language
  32. Spill out secrets
  33. Make plans on each others walls
  34. Ignore a private message
  35. Sell straight off
  36. Spam walls
  37. Use long-hashtag-as-a-punchline (@AbracoExpresso #JustNeedMoreCoffee)
  38. Write “LOL” as status update
  39. Confuse Facebook with real life (“Why you didn’t see my update? Are you really my friend?”)
  40. Announce every movement (“She just left the room”)

  42. Use baby for attention (“Isn’t little Liz so cute?”)
  43. Preach about religion, politics
  44. Deliver sermons (“Never ever drink and drive. Live responsibly.”)
  45. Give only virtual gifts
  46. Update status that can’t be understood (“Hmmm…this”)
  47. Update status when a private message was appropriate (“630 or 730 pm”)
  48. Forward someone’s content without giving credit
  49. Send friend requests to people you met 30 minutes ago
  50. Use the facebook default silhouette picture
  51. Comment for every comment received (“Thank you, Jen 🙂 Thank you, Jason :))
  52. Reply to messages on people’s walls
  53. Adore friends on Facebook, and ignore them in real life
  54. Block friends for no apparent reason
  55. Write long compositions as status messages
  56. Send app requests to everyone
  57. Be disrespectful of others’ opinions
  58. Use someone (spouse, child, etc) to manage your FB account

  60. Use someone’s picture, fictional character, or logo as your profile picture

While most of this is great advise, a good few of these are really common sense. It’s sad that common sense isn’t exactly common these days, especially on social networks.

#15 is one of my pet peeves! One other thing that ticks me off is when people use short forms of words like they do for SMS… e.g. using “der” instead of “there”.

    Fantastic work compiling this list!

An impressive share on social media etiquette! Tell me how many acknowledge all these 60 pointers when we communicate in the social web? YouTube is replete with profanity; Facebook and G+ with narcissism. Big thumbs up for this blog post!

  • Carol Devine-Sullivan

    Great post, Sudio!

There are several loudmouths and narcissists on Facebook who do not know to carry themselves with aplomb. I want to describe a despicable FB incident.

My friend recently posted a picture with his son celebrating his 10th birthday at a five-star hotel in the city. The picture and my friend’s post received several responses. Most, of course, were direct birthday wishes for the young man. Supposedly, that is the only response one can possibly leave for my friend. One insensitive man, apparently a common friend, posted: I was in this five-star hotel just last weekend. Food could have been better.

Though his comment does not clearly fall in your huge list of “don’t do’s,” his comment was unmistakably unseemly and impertinent.
